Beloved lifeguard and North Shore icon remembered

Honolulu, Hawaii - May 20, 2023

Tamayo Perry, a beloved lifeguard, waterman, and surfer, died on Friday, May 19, 2023, after an apparent shark attack off the coast of Oahu. He was 49 years old.

Perry was a native of Hawaii and a lifelong resident of the North Shore. He was a father, a husband, an avid surfer, and a passionate advocate for water safety. As a lifeguard for the City and County of Honolulu's Ocean Safety Division, Perry was known for his dedication to saving lives and his love for the ocean.

Kurt Lager, acting chief of the Ocean Safety Department, said, "Tamayo was a great lifeguard who was loved by all. He was always willing to help others and was a true asset to our team." Perry joined the department in 2014 and had previously worked as a lifeguard for the Banzai Pipeline Surfing Championships.

Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi expressed his condolences, saying, "Tamayo Perry was a legendary waterman and a highly respected member of our community. His death is a tragic loss, and our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time."
